A rope woven charpoy claims to be the oldest account of a bed as depicted in Odyssey. Ancient civilization saw beds made of straw and palm leaves as early as 8000 BC. Over time, changes were made by different civilizations and beds started getting elevated off the ground, bed frames were added, fabric made an entrance followed by curtains etc. Egyptians added headrests and the Romans brought in mattresses. Metal beds and ivory beds were also used over time.
Needless to say that the single bed was and is a piece of furniture which has changed its role from being used only for sleeping to getting designer looks and playing a major part in planning the décor of today’s bedroom. Designer frames, headrests, spring mattresses, designer pillows, bedspreads, quilts and duvets are the order of the day depending on your budget.
